The Votes are In...Tiger and Polar Bear!

Last week in celebration of Earth Day, all Swanson students had the opportunity to cast two votes for our Henry Doorly Zoo Adopt-an Animal Project. Every Swanson student voted by ballot for their top two choices. And the winners were: the tiger and the polar bear. We will be sending our Omaha’s Henry Doorly Zoo money to “adopt” these animals and help with their care. This was a project sponsored by our Swanson Student Leadership Team.

Learning Objectives
The district’s strategic goal is, “All students will meet
or exceed proficiency in reading, writing, and math and
the achievement gap between sub-groups will decrease
annually.” One thing all schools are doing to support
this goal is to identify a key instructional element to
emphasize in the building. Swanson’s instructional
element is formulating learning objectives. As a staff we
have been reviewing the five parts of a learning object:
content, thinking level, student behavior, conditions,
performance. Content identifies the specific learning.
Thinking level identifies what kind of thinking students
will be expected to use during the learning process.
Student behavior is what students will do to show their
learning. Conditions are the materials, resources, and time
teachers will provide for students when they are expected
to perform the student behavior. Finally, performance is
the expected level of performance students must show
as proof that the learning has occurred. We know that
clear learning objectives result in the best teaching and
learning. Your Swanson Superstar Staff is committed to
doing our best so our students can shine!
Westside Writing Center
K-6, the foundation:
Our writing program emphasizes how to write well for a variety of purposes and audiences. The program’s core is the workshop where children write every day for up to an hour and learn how to plan, write, revise, edit, and publish. All students practice and master various modes of writing. They also learn the conventions of standard written English. Westside’s research-based program prepares students to succeed as writers in middle school, high school, college, and beyond.

Use this link to explore how students and parents can explore our writing program.
