Swanson Geography Bee
The annual Swanson Geography Bee was held on Tuesday, December 20. All fourth, fifth, and sixth graders were eligible to participate, and 18 students chose to do so. Students had the opportunity to attend early morning preparation sessions in November and December, and many studied independently outside of the school day. The questions were provided by the National Geographic Society. Topics in the preliminary rounds were US geography, the continents, world capital cities, and cultural geography.
Can you correctly answer these sample questions?
Which state capital is closer to the Atlantic Ocean-Springfield or Richmond?
Which state has more people per square mile-New Jersey or Nevada?
The country with the longest coastline is located on which continent?
To visit a famous chocolate factory in Brussels, you would travel to which European country?
Potatoes were first cultivated more than a thousand years ago by people living in which mountain system in the Western Hemisphere?
Our first place winner was fifth grader Madigan Brodsky, second place was sixth grader Patrick Duggan, and the third place winner was fourth grader Ethan Yaroch. Madigan will take a written qualifying exam this month to see if she will eligible to participate in the regional bee. Congratulations to all of the interested students who gave the extra effort to learn more about our world!

Learning Objectives
The district’s strategic goal is, “All students will meet
or exceed proficiency in reading, writing, and math and
the achievement gap between sub-groups will decrease
annually.” One thing all schools are doing to support
this goal is to identify a key instructional element to
emphasize in the building. Swanson’s instructional
element is formulating learning objectives. As a staff we
have been reviewing the five parts of a learning object:
content, thinking level, student behavior, conditions,
performance. Content identifies the specific learning.
Thinking level identifies what kind of thinking students
will be expected to use during the learning process.
Student behavior is what students will do to show their
learning. Conditions are the materials, resources, and time
teachers will provide for students when they are expected
to perform the student behavior. Finally, performance is
the expected level of performance students must show
as proof that the learning has occurred. We know that
clear learning objectives result in the best teaching and
learning. Your Swanson Superstar Staff is committed to
doing our best so our students can shine!

Westside Writing Center
K-6, the foundation:
Our writing program emphasizes how to write well for a variety of purposes and audiences. The program’s core is the workshop where children write every day for up to an hour and learn how to plan, write, revise, edit, and publish. All students practice and master various modes of writing. They also learn the conventions of standard written English. Westside’s research-based program prepares students to succeed as writers in middle school, high school, college, and beyond.
